Currently, Spain is facing one of the worst
wildfire crises in its history. High temperatures, prolonged drought, and the
neglect of rural areas have created the perfect setting for the fire to spread
uncontrollably, causing irreparable damage to our natural heritage and the
lives of thousands of people. The situation is critical and forces us to
reflect on the need to adopt more efficient and sustainable land management
strategies.
In this difficult context, we want to highlight
the importance of projects like BioNNOMÍA, which demonstrate that prevention is
key. Extensive livestock farming and transhumance, far from being practices of
the past, are vital tools for the future of our forests. By grazing, livestock
clears the undergrowth that acts as fuel, creating natural firebreaks that slow
down the advance of the flames. It is a model that brings together tradition
and innovation to protect our ecosystems and our communities.
Now is the time to invest in these solutions,
to value the role of our herders, and to understand that the health of our
countryside is the best defense against fire. Only in this way can we build a
safer and more resilient future for all.
We, the organizations working in BioNNOMÍA, are
deeply moved by this situation. We want to express our deepest condolences to
the families of the victims and send our support and encouragement to the
firefighters, volunteers, and everyone affected by this tragedy. Your courage
and effort are an example of bravery and solidarity.
