Last Saturday, 21st June, the municipality of
Prioro (León) welcomed the transhumant flock of José Manuel Sánchez, formed by
1700 Merino sheep approximately. The flock arrived at the enclosure about one
o’clock in the afternoon, after travelling around 600 kilometres from Huertas
de Ánimas (Trujillo) to the mountains of León.
The arrival of the flock was one of the
highlights of the XXXI Fiesta de la Trashumancia (Transhumant Fest), a
community festival where people showed their fully support to celebrate and
protect this ancient tradition and its contribution to sustainability and the
conservation of ecosystems.
As part of the event, Ernestine Lüdeke,
president of the foundation Fundación Monte Mediterráneo —a partner
entity of the BioNNOMÍA project— presented the project's progress. During her
speech, Lüdeke recalled the objectives of the BioNNOMÍA project and emphasized
its commitment to the conservation of biodiversity linked to extensive and
organic livestock farming, as well as transhumance. She also highlighted the
importance of promoting production models that contribute to the sustainability
of ecosystems and the mitigation of climate change.
The presentation on BioNNOMÍA helped to
underscore the fundamental role of transhumance and shepherds as key allies in
the conservation of the environment, livestock trails, and the strengthening of
sustainable rural development.
BioNNOMÍA is supported by the foundation Fundación Biodiversidad of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), financed by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
