The Transhumance represents an Immaterial Cultural Heritage of Spain

 April, 8th,  2017

Fort he first time, the goverment of Spain adopts a declaration of such type applying the Law for the Conservation of Immaterial Cultural Heritage from the year 2015

Yesterday, the Council of Ministers adopted the decleration of the Transhumance as an Immaterial Cultural Heritage.

It is the first time of a declaration of such type applying the Law for the Conservation of Immaterial Cultural Heritage from May, 25th, 2015. “Semana Santa” [Holy Week] and Carnival also have obtained this status.

These decisions are part of the “Plan Cultura 2020”, which recently has been presented by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports. It includes projects to promote the declaration of many forms of expression to be Immaterial Cultural Heritage.

The transhumance today means a vivid cultural heritage. Besides of its function as an identifying cultural element in large parts of the country, the transhumance bore a rich asset of traditions, feasts, toponyms, gastronomy, and architecture related to it.

Oral tradition, handcraft, traditional shepherding and the pasture use system in terms of customary law belong to the transhumance culture which has helped to spread these assets all over the different and distant areas of the peninsula.

This way, the transhumance turned out to be a mecanism of transmission and exchange of culture assets between the different areas of Spain. The broad network of trails, “vías pecuarias”, allowed to exchange information, news and knowledge which led to a certain cultural homogeneity between differently moulded areas on a social and cultural level.
